Group Therapy
Group therapy is a powerful treatment for those struggling with the effects of trauma. The specific group I run is Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is 12 sessions long. The main purposes of the group are to help people understand the ways that trauma has impacted them, learn skills to help them recover from trauma, and apply those skills in their daily life in order to reduce PTSD symptoms and live in a way that is meaningful to them.
The group is open to people of all genders with wide variety of trauma histories (e.g., rape, sexual assault, childhood abuse, combat exposure, vehicle accidents, domestic violence, identity-related trauma). Group members are asked not to share the details of their trauma in the group -- the goal is not to relive their trauma. Rather, the group helps people learn skills to reduce trauma's current impact on their lives in a supportive environment. This is a closed group, meaning everyone starts the group at the same time, and the same people attend each week (i.e., it is not "drop-in"). This is one of the aspects of the group that helps members feel comfortable with each other quickly.
CPT in group format has been shown to be equally effective as individual therapy. Compared to individual therapy, it also has the added benefit of helping people learn from the experiences of others and increasing their social support. Practicing therapy skills each day between group sessions is key to benefitting from the group. Because of this, the group is a good fit for individuals who are committed to attend every session and practice the strategies they learn every day while the group is running.
Joining the group begins with a free, 15-minute phone consultation with me to see if it is a good fit you. If so, we then have a 55-minute intake appointment to help you prepare for the group and further ensure that group treatment is appropriate. After all group members are recruited, we meet twice weekly via telehealth for six weeks, for a total of 12 sessions (days/times TBD based on client availability).
I only hold group therapy at certain times during the year. Please contact me to learn when the next group will begin.
